Subsidised pricing for those replacing mattresses and furniture due to flood damage.

Over the past few weeks, Koala has donated 500 mattresses to communities impacted by the recent floods in Queensland and New South Wales.

This was one of the worst flood disasters in recent history and there is still more work to be done.

We know the act of rebuilding will be a long haul.

That’s why we’ve launched the Flood Damage Replacement Program to offer subsidised pricing to those looking to replace furniture due to flooding.

We’ve allocated up to $300,000 in product subsidies to this program, bringing the total product value of Koala’s flood response contribution to over $500,000.

We know this figure pales in comparison to the massive cost of rebuilding. But it is our hope that this contribution will help make the journey to recovery that little bit easier.

Who’s eligible?

Households located in the Natural Disaster Declared Local Government Areas (LGAs) in QLD and NSW whose furniture has been damaged in the recent flooding events from 22 February 2022 onwards.

Across South East QLD and Northern NSW, communities are reeling from one of the worst flood disasters in Australian history.

As communities begin the epic task of rebuilding, we want to help in some small way.

The Northern Rivers region holds a special place in Koala’s heart. It is where our founders first met, where the idea of Koala was born, and is still home to a number of Koala employees.

Initially, our focus has been sourcing and donating a little over 500 mattresses to those who need them most.

On Friday 4 March, we put a call out to communities via social media, asking people to reach out if they needed help.

The response was immediate and incredible.

We have distributed half the mattresses via community partners in Lismore, Mullumbimby, Ocean Shores and the Northern Rivers Indigenous community.

The remainder have been allocated to those who have reached out to us directly. We are working on getting these to people in the coming weeks.

What happens next?

We know many more people are impacted. As affected communities rebuild we will continue to work to supply stock to our partners and develop a broader plan to help more people.

We will share updates on this blog as we move forward.

In the meantime, if you or someone you know needs help, please reach out to the Koala Flood Response team and we will connect you with our community partners.

A good pillow is essential to a good night’s sleep.

When it comes to pillows, it’s hard to beat our award-winning Koala gel-infused memory foam pillow.

We aren’t the only ones who love the Koala Pillow, it’s been voted the best pillow in Australia. That’s right — in 2021, the Koala Pillow won the 2021 Canstar Blue ‘Most Satisfied Customers’ Award (Pillow category). With over 4000 customer reviews, here’s why customers love the Koala Pillow.

A side for every sleeper

Wondering which pillow is best for you? The Koala Pillow has both a firm and soft side, so you can flip it to the side you like best. The dual sides means the Koala Pillow suits everyone from side sleepers, stomach sleepers, back sleepers and even combination sleepers.

The secret to it’s dual usage is the conical holes throughout the pillow which provide alternative firmness and ventilation.

The soft side features larger holes in the memory foam, which compress to cradle your head and provide a lower profile. The firm side features smaller holes which provide a firmer feel for those who require extra neck support.

So which side is which?  Look for the label on the cover – S is for soft, F is for firm.

Never look for the “cool side” again

There’s nothing better than the feeling of flipping your pillow, and laying your head on the “cool side”.

Some memory foam pillows can trap heat or get warmer as you lie on them. With the Koala Pillow your head will stay cool all night long, thanks to the cooling gel-infused memory foam that moves heat and moisture away from your head.

As well as providing compression, the holes inside the memory foam act as ventilation and allow airflow to the other side of the pillow, keeping your head cool.

No more neck pain

Time and time again, customers tell us how the Koala Pillow has solved problems with neck pain. So what’s the secret? The outer edges of our pillow are firmer than the rest which means your neck is supported in any position. So you get all the goodness of those ritzy contour pillows without the price tag (or strange shape).

Memory foam that actually remembers its shape

Some memory foam pillows can take a while to return to their original shape, and after a while just don’t have the same height. Thanks to the conical hole design, the Koala Pillow compresses and returns to its original shape quickly, making it perfect for combination sleepers and anyone who changes sleeping positions during the night.

They get softer

Linen gets better with time, the more you use your sheets the softer they will become. But we know you don’t want to wait, so Koala’s linen sheets have an enzyme wash finish, so they are already soft to touch.

Want them even softer? Toss in a bit of fabric softener with every wash.

Koala Le Linen Sheet Set and Duvet Set is Natural

A bit of shedding is completely normal

When you first get your linen sheets you may notice they shed fibres. Shedding is a natural occurrence in the life cycle of linen and will reduce after a couple of washes. Keep shedding to a minimum by following the care instructions for your sheets.

Couch feeling a little crusty? Sectional seen better days? Lounge longing for some love? Alright, you probably get the drift. If you’re reading this, you’ve likely realised it’s high time to get rid of your old sofa and invest in a new one.

Fortunately, you don’t need to wander from showroom to showroom perusing prospective couch after prospective couch. In fact, it’s much simpler and quicker (with some cheeky benefits they won’t tell you in-store like *ahem* mark ups) to just pick up your new sofa online.

To help make the process a total cinch, we teamed up with our Design Manager, Adam Harrigan, and Product Manager, Kellie Hawkins, and put together a few handy tips. You’re very welcome.

1. Focus on your goals

Koala Coastal Sofa in Milk Bar

“Focus on your goals?” we hear you ask. “I thought this was a guide to help me buy a sofa and couches online, not a motivational pep talk.” This’ll soon make sense, we promise.

With so many sofas to choose from online, we get that it can be tricky narrowing down your search. That’s why one of the most crucial steps when considering a new sofa is to think about what you’re using it for and who will use it most.

Will it be the focal point of your living room where everyone parks their bums for a rainy day movie marathon? Will it be sitting in the guest room for when your mother-in-law comes to stay? Or will it be a cherished arvo napping spot?

Your sofa’s main purpose will help determine things like size, firmness, functionality and even fabric. For example, if you and your family plan to spend several hours on it watching the entire LOTR trilogy, you’ll want something super-soft, super-sized and made with super-durable materials. If your MIL plans to visit regularly or you want a second spot to lay your head, a comfy sofa bed or corner sofa is pretty much a no-brainer.

Luckily, this is something we know a lot about, meaning whatever your choice from the Koala Sofa Range, you’ll be guaranteed to love it.

“We consider all the ways you would interact with the sofa: how you sit, how you lounge, how comfortable the sofa will be after a 12-hour Netflix binge,” says Kellie. “We look at different fibre fills and foam layer construction that will give you the support you need.”

2. Consider the dimensions of the couch and your space

Koala Modern Sofa in Hawky

When you’re purchasing a new sofa, you want to make sure it’ll suit the size of your living room, spare room, bedroom or what have you. If the sofa is too big, it may not even fit. If it’s too small, it might not work with the proportions of your space. Wrong shape and it’ll just look… off.

But if it hits that sweet spot? You’ll be rewarded with a couch that you’ll love to sit on, sleep on and look at for many years to come.

This is where the dimensions of both the couch and your space become very important, advises Adam: “Think about the space and check the size in relation to where you are going to put it,” he says.

“This is a big investment, so take the time to make sure it will fit your space correctly,” agrees Kellie. “First, understand the measurements of the sofa. Before purchasing your sofa, measure the size of the living room. Mark out the space of the sofa with string on your floor to understand exactly how much space the sofa will take up.

“This is one of the main reasons people return a sofa, as they didn’t understand how big it would actually be in their home.”

Living in a cosy apartment? Here’s a bonus tip from Kellie: “If you’re living in a small space, consider sofas that don’t sit directly on the floor.

“Products like Koala’s Compact Sofa and Lounging Sofa have higher clearance under the sofa. This means they will make a room look larger and give the impression of air and light under the sofa, which will keep your furniture from looking too heavy and taking up too much space visually.”

3. Think about your style (and maybe even your 10-years-from-now style)

Koala Cork Sofa in Jenolan Black

Sure, comfort is key, but so are a sofa’s looks. After all, this may be a feature in your living room  that you’ll have to look at every day, for a bloody long time. So, you’ll probably want to like what you’re seeing.

Adam suggests assessing the main colour scheme you’ve adopted in your home to help figure out the best couch. “Have a look at the colours in your home and pick a sofa colour that will complement your other items, floors and walls,” he says.

And because a new sofa is quite a major purchase, Kellie says you may also want to think about how the couch will look in the future.

“When purchasing a sofa, you are considering a product that is going to be a part of your home for a long time,” she says. “This is not a throwaway item, so consider what colour you are going to be able to live with that will not date and will suit your style.”

4. Rely on reviews

Koala Cushy Sofa Bed in Ink

The process of buying a sofa online is a time to really lean on the couch-buying community. And by that we simply mean: read the reviews.

While anyone—including us—can easily tell you that you’ve come across the best darn couch ever, reviewers will give you cold, hard, honest insight. They’ll let you know what they genuinely think of the comfort-factor, quality and appearance of your prospective couch, as well as the customer service they received.

Many online retailers include reviews on each product page (well, we do!) but you can also take your internet sleuthing one step further by checking out product review sites and forums.

The other great thing about reading reviews is that many reviewers will include a photo of their couch at home. This means that on top of seeing the sofa in an online catalogue, you’ll get an idea of how it’ll really look once you unwrap it, plus some bonus styling tips. Because we appreciate that you want to see Koala furniture in its natural habitat, we provide this functionality in our review section, too.

And not to brag (or maybe we are meaning to!), but as the home of over 50,000 five star reviews, we like to think our customers know a thing or two.

5. Get a feel for the customer service

Koala Lounging Sofa in Icy Pole

When you’re furniture shopping online, good customer service is key. From browsing to buying all the way to bringing your new sofa into your home, you’ll likely be communicating with customer service remotely—so you’ll want to ensure the support you receive is solid. This includes things like delivery, aftercare, warranty and returns.

These are the questions you should be asking, according to Kellie:

“Check the store’s return policy and reviews,” she says. “How easy is the company to deal with if there is an issue? What have other customers’ experiences been? If something does go wrong, how quickly can they replace the sofa? Most furniture retailers make you wait 3-4 months minimum to get your sofa, so what happens if they have made a mistake? Do you need to wait another 3-4 months to get what you ordered?

“The majority of retailers make good-quality furniture, but understanding their aftercare and how they deal with issues gives you the confidence to purchase.”

Not to toot our own horn, but we realise that these are some of the most common frustrations when buying a sofa online. So, we offer some pretty fab benefits to make online couch-shopping—and your life in general—a heck of a lot easier: 4-hour delivery in metro areas; easy assembly that’s devoid of Allen Keys; complicated instructions and arguments with your significant other; and of course, fuss-free returns. Chuck our multi-award-winning Customer Service team, you can shop comfortably knowing you’re in good hands.

And like any good long-term relationship, we also let you get to know your new Koala sofa before committing to it.

“Take advantage of companies with 120-night trials,” says Kellie. (Oh hey, that’s us!) “Because seeing a sofa in a store does not always give you the feel and impression of how the sofa will look in your home.”

And if you need a little help determining which Koala sofa is right for you, you can read all about them here.

Koala Lounging Sofa: Australia’s #1 rated sofa

Koala Lounging Sofa in Icy Pole

Our first love in the sofa world, our Lounging Sofa was made with the same approach to our mattresses; a timeless design made for real living rooms (not showrooms), keeping the environment in mind, and ridiculously comfy.

Designed for those laid back Aussie arvos, our Lounging Sofa is built durably, easy to assemble and disassemble, and is reasonably priced. The outer fabric is scratch- and stain-resistant and easy to clean but oh-so-soft to touch.

Available in a 3-seater or 2-seater option with ottoman, the Lounging Sofa is now available in four colours: Brushtail Grey, Bonnie Doon Blue and our newest additions Grey Nurse and Icy Pole.

Koala Modern Sofa: great for growing and going with you

Koala Modern Sofa in Blue Heeler

It’s clear that people want two things: options, and to put their feet up. Our answer? The best-selling Koala Modern Sofa. It’s not only our first chaise lounge—it’s also our very first modular sofa. If you ask, we deliver.

Modular sofas are great for adapting with you as you change spaces or grow in numbers throughout life.

As we expand and grow into our ideal homes it makes sense to have a sofa that can grow with us and fit within our lives as we live them.

The modular nature of this sofa gives the freedom to configure it to suit your needs so you can stretch out or curl up with your partner, kids, friends, family and fur-babies.

Koala Design Manager

But we did more than create a versatile furniture piece—when applying Koala principles to a modular design, we wound up reimagining the tired modular formula altogether.

The modern is soft and cushy with a classic, sturdy silhouette, can be delivered in four hours, and has a quality designer aesthetic without the modular’s usual hefty price tag.

There’s three colours to choose from that go with everything, and the beauty of this style is that even with fixed modulars, you’ll get extra seating capacity and can make use of wasted corners.

The Modern Sofa comes in three colourways: Arvo Storm, Hawky and our newly released colour, Blue Heeler.

The Compact Sofa: for contemporary apartments

Koala Compact Sofa in Trusty Willow

Speaking of tight spaces, the Compact Sofa is your go-to for contemporary, urban, apartment living, but also fab for granny flats or additions. Read: this is the three-seater that’ll fit in a studio.

It’s designed around the ethos that a small space doesn’t need to lack style or comfort, a philosophy that shouldn’t be rocket science. Yet somehow, finding sofas for compact homes where style is not an afterthought has been tough (until now, obviously).

Sleek and minimal with super soft upholstery, ergonomic comfort and timber feet, the compact sofa comes in a creamy tan (Trusty Willow) and warm-washed charcoal grey (Tucker Bag).

The Coastal Sofa: for those who know lounging is serious business

Koala Coastal Sofa in Nomad

This sofa is inspired by the salty sea spray of Byron Bay. Comfy as sin and easy on the eye, once you’re in, you won’t want to leave your soothing spot.

The proportions have been pulled low, deep and wide to ensure that whatever position you sit in is the right position to stretch out and sink in.

KOALA DESIGN MANAGER

In three quintessentially beachy colours (billabong blue, milk-bar white and now, sandy Nomad) and with a beaut matching armchair and ottoman, the Coastal Sofa set practically begs you to get down low and take it slow.

Functionally speaking, all our sofas—which range from 1 to 4.5-seaters—will easily make it to any living room of any home as they’ve been built to navigate tight turns, low doors and narrow stairways. Once inside, you won’t need any tools for assembly or disassembly and you’ll get a 120-night trial and a 5-year warranty. Plus, they’re FSC® and CertiPUR-US certified.

The Cork Sofa: for those who don’t want to trade style for sustainability

Koala Cork Sofa in Yarra Cork. Source: Temple Farmhouse Byron Bay

The perfect couch for wine lovers and animal lovers alike, the cork sofa will pave the way for leather alternatives as Aussies look to more sustainable homeware options.

The Cork Sofa features a timeless design with sophisticated finishes and the natural, textural look of the cork material, so you can enjoy the finer things in life without the guilt. Using only animal-free and eco-friendly dyes and coating materials, the Cork Sofa is available in two colourways—Yarra Cork and Jenolan Black—to suit all tastes and spaces.

And the best part? Like all Koala products, all of our sofas comes with fast and free delivery and our risk-free 120-night trial. With every Koala sofa you buy, you also make a symbolic turtle adoption through Koala’s partnership with WWF-Australia.

It’s all a bit of a sofa dream with enough options to suit everyone and every home.

Since we launched our OG Mattress back in 2015, the mattress-in-a-box industry has boomed, and we’ve boomed with it, using the same approach and attitude to branch into the home furniture space — target the pain points of the industry, and fix them.

This approach is the backbone of our success to date, but it’d all be worth zilch if it weren’t for our incredibly talented product and design team who’s engineering has helped build us into the company we are today.

With our brand new Koala Mattress Range finally here, loaded with years of know-how and how-did-they-do-it, we thought it’s only right to shed some light on our brilliant design and product teams, focusing on all the work that they’ve done over the past seven years to get us to this point.

Designing the new Koala Mattress Range

The Design team at Koala are the ones that put the polish on every mattress and piece of furniture. They’re the ones that make sure our products look elegant and visually reflect our brand and Aussie heritage.

The new mattress range was an opportunity to bring together a new ‘signature Koala feel’ with a new ‘signature Koala look’. Our thinking behind the design is to enhance our known and loved Koala ‘look’ by drawing on the unique land and culture we have here in Australia. We referenced the Australian desert for our quilting design, and chose textures and materials that are tactile and calming. Our colours reflect the Australian landscape, but ultimately we chose neutral colours that will live in homes from Sydney to Tokyo and Seoul.

The pattern of the mattress started by looking at Australian land and weather patterns, exploring things like the sun, daylight, wind, storms, calm before and after. Ultimately, the final pattern concept came from the movement of the Australian desert and the ripples of the sand.

Whilst the simplicity of the original Koala Mattress has resonated with customers, we needed to focus on delivering a better experience through comfort, performance and design touchpoints. While we’ll miss the cheeky blue that Koala started with on the OG Mattress, we have since become a global brand. This means offering designs that work across the globe and can sit in many homes.

The making of the new Koala Mattress Range

Koala Calm As Mattress

While the Design team at Koala is in charge of aesthetics, the Product team shoulders the mammoth task of ensuring each product we put on the market is functionally brilliant and perfect for our customers.

When we designed the new mattress range we knew that the way we sleep is unique as we are. So our range needed to cater to as many different sleeping preferences as possible. We wanted each mattress to deliver that signature Koala feel, no matter which one you choose, you can be sure it will still have the cloud-like feel that Koala is known for.

The COOLMAX® fibres in the sleep surface of our Calm As mattress can help you stay cool and dry for a better night’s sleep. The adaptive foam springs and bamboo charcoal memory foam layer in our Soul Mate mattress can help take some of the pressure off. The TENCEL™ Lyocell used in the New Koala Mattress has been produced with low ecological impact, as well as being breathable and smooth to the touch.

The biggest change from the original design is our new Flippable Kloudcell™ Comfort Layer, which allows you to you can unzip and flip to whichever firmness feels right for you. All three of our new mattresses have a “firm” and a “medium-firm” side, making it easier than ever to customise the way you sleep.

Throughout this process, we’ve rigorously tested our mattresses – undergoing sleep trials, conducting comprehensive durability testing, pressure mapping, and safety certification. We developed a whopping 144 unique prototypes before landing on the final three mattresses.

Our mattress range has also been independently assessed to meet a wide range of environmental, human health, and social impact criteria. So you can be certain you’re making a purchase that is better for you, and better for the planet.

Put simply, our design and product teams are exceptional, and when you’re curled up on your brand new Koala Mattress having the best sleep of your life (because let’s face it, why wouldn’t you buy one after reading this?), you’ll know just who to thank.

When it comes to revamping your home on a budget, there’s a wide range of options available to you that can instantly breathe new life into your habitat. Whilst we’ll be the the first to tell you that Koala products are all stunning additions to your home (and we will tell you that, of course) there are plenty of other methods, both big and small, that can take your living space to the next level without breaking the bank.

Work with what you’ve got

It might be a little odd for a furniture brand to tell you not to buy something new, but that might just be the right move for you at the moment. Until that juicy tax return comes through you may not be in a position to invest in Australia’s #1 rated sofa just yet. Instead, take stock of what you already have and think about how you can rearrange your furniture to give your place a fresh feel.

Alternatively, think about what you could remove from the room to help declutter your space. Where possible, try to avoid throwing away items and instead think about donating your old furniture to op shops if you’re unable to sell them or give them away to friends and family.

Picking key pieces of furniture

Once you’ve taken stock of what you have and what you want to keep, figure out what you want to add to your living space. What’s missing or what can be upgraded in order to revamp your area and add value.

You could try looking at:

A new bookshelf – a perfect combination of easily accessible storage, and an extra element in your living room that you can style to your liking.

Shop wise, shop well

When you’re ready to buy a new piece of furniture, there are two questions you need to ask yourself:

If either of those questions are answered with anything other than a clear yes, don’t buy it.

Make sure that you spend your money on good quality furniture that you’ll genuinely enjoy looking at and using. If you buy a couch or a table purely because it’s cheap, you’ll constantly be on the lookout for a replacement which will just add costs down the track. Take your time and spend your hard-earned money wisely.

Products that can grow with you

In your current living situation you may not have a great deal of space to work with. That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to limit your thinking when planning out your living space.

The entire Koala sofa range is available in a variety of sizes which allows you to pick the perfect size sofa for your current situation whilst giving you the freedom to plan for future upsizing by adding more pieces down the track. For example, if you’re living in a studio apartment, a 2-seater sofa could be all you need. If you then decide to move into a house a few years later, you could buy a 3-seater from Koala in the same style, saving you from buying a brand new set of couches from scratch.

Bundle buying

Similar to the previous point, there are advantages in buying products that have multiple sizes or items in the one style, specifically when you buy them all at once in a bundle.

Other than saving money by buying as a set, if you have a friend or family member with a similar taste in style, consider buying bundled products and sharing the items. You could either pick which items from the bundle that you each want to keep and split the cost accordingly, or swap the items occasionally to update the look and feel of your living space every few months.

Koala’s bundle offering doesn’t just accommodate combinations of sofa sizes either, we offer a wide range of furniture combinations perfect for modern and neat living spaces, such as the ‘get around it’ bundle, which includes a 3-seater Lounging Sofa, Coaster Coffee Table, and an Ottoman.

Accessories and styling

Once you’ve got the bulkier pieces of your living space sorted, tie the room together with simple and affordable accessories. These could be as simple as styling your bookshelf with small knick knacks and reading material, or hanging up artwork to fill in blank walls.

Op shops and vintage stores are perfect places to find accessories for your home when styling on a budget.

Be careful not to over do it and re-clutter your space.

Plants

Get back to nature with a variety of indoor plants to breathe life into your room. Large plants can often be expensive so start small by planting your own, keeping them in smaller locations to disguise their size until they grow into larger plants you can use more as a feature.

Wander around your area and ask neighbours if you can take trimmings from their trees for you to replant and propagate.

Learn how you can do your part for the environment by effectively recycling or reusing the packaging that Koala products are delivered in.

How to recycle and repurpose your Koala product packaging

In recent years, brands, businesses and individuals have placed a greater focus on sustainability and recycling, with a specific focus on plastic. Armed with the knowledge of how long plastic takes to break down in landfill (hint: a really, really long time), we’re constantly on the lookout for new ways to take responsibility for waste products, finding innovative and unusual methods to recycle or otherwise repurpose plastic.

What packaging do we use at Koala and what can you do with them afterwards?

If you’ve purchased a Koala product recently you’ll know first hand how we package our furniture to ensure that it arrives safely and in perfect condition.

The materials we use are:

Cardboard

The cardboard we use for our product packaging is 100% recyclable, without any wax or plastic coatings. This means you can fold it up and put it in your paper bin for regular collection – make sure to remove any staples or glue first though. Alternatively, keep your Koala furniture boxes stashed away for the next time you or a mate moves house.

Low-density Polyethylene (LDPE)

This material is crucial to the compact packaging we employ for our products, making it faster and more efficient for us to get your furniture delivered to your doorstep. LDPE can be identified by the number 4 inside the recycling symbol, located at various points on the plastic.

Some councils allow LDPE to go in their plastics recycling bin but please note that the majority of Australian councils do not allow this. Fortunately, with the help of REDcycle it’s becoming even easier to access recycling locations for LDPE.

REDcycle is a recycling organisation that has developed and implemented a recovery initiative for post-consumer soft plastic, including LDPE. They’ve partnered with Coles and Woolworths to ensure that there’s a soft-plastic deposit bin at every store nationwide. So make sure you remember to take the LDPE packaging from your Koala product with you (along with your reusable shopping bag) when you next go to the shops.

Silica Gel Packets

Silica Gel Packets are useful in our packaging due to their moisture-absorbing quality, ensuring your product stays dry and mold-free in transit.

What you may not realise though, is that there are a myriad of ways to reuse these packets in your own personal habitat:

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)

EPS is a form of styrofoam that’s thin, durable, lightweight and effective as a cushioning material for products in transit. Similar to LDPE, EPS can’t be disposed of with your everyday kerbside plastics bin. Instead, there are a number of facilities around Australia dedicated to recycling EPS – find your nearest EPS recycler here.

We understand that sourcing a specific recycling location to dispose of the EPS used in Koala product packaging isn’t always convenient or in some cases, possible, so we’ve collated a list of ways that you can repurpose EPS around the home:

I’ve just bought a Koala mattress, what do I do with my old one?

We’re glad you asked! In selected areas of Sydney and Melbourne we’ve partnered with Soft Landing, a mattress recycling social enterprise, to remove and recycle your old mattress for FREE. They will also collect the packaging from your new Koala mattress for recycling if you let them know when booking your mattress pick-up.

New year, new space, right? Kicking off 2022 with a room refresh is a great way to shake the cobwebs out of your home. Not literally, you’ll need a pest control guy for that. While interior trends should always be considered with caution (do you love it? Or do you love it because everyone on Instagram loves it) they are fantastic inspiration, especially when you don’t want to do a total overhaul, but just switch things up a bit.

These are our fave 2022 interior trends, from the OTT vibes of grand-millennial to the soothing energy of nature-inspired colourways.

Inspired by nature

Yep, we’ve taken our obsession with indoor plants and applied the same love of nature-but-make-it-interiors to furniture and decor.

From natural fibres like bamboo to hues that make you think of your favourite holiday destination (our Coastal Sofa in Billabong reminds us of lazy beach days down the coast), we’re bringing the outside inside more than ever in 2022.

If you’re considering this trend on a big scale, look for furniture that not only uses natural materials like timber, cork, and cotton, but is also taking cues from nature in shape, texture and colour. On a more budget-friendly level, just updating your bedding to soothing colours can have a major impact on your space. We personally love our Le Linen set in Bush Scrub.

Texture

This one’s for the touchy-feely types. Textured interiors are going to be huge in 2022, across all decor. We’re talking big, snuggly rugs, knobbly cactus plants – even rough, unpolished ceramics. The more you want to touch it, the better.

Texture is a fantastic trend to embrace if you’re not looking to completely redo your space, but want to add some fresh feels. We’re thinking tactile cushions thrown on your couch, a 70s-style shag rug and some wonky, rough pottery.

Sustainability

More than ever, interior trends are being dictated by sustainability – a great thing, in our opinion! This means finding furniture and interiors that are made with the planet front of mind is easier than ever.

It also means we’re being more mindful about what we need, versus what we simply want. Always look for products that you’ll cherish for years, both from a versatility perspective and from a quality one.

Grand millennial

A portmanteau of “granny” and “millennial”, this trend is exactly what you think it is – being inspired by nan’s lounge room. Embroidered pillows, op shop artworks, big florals, the gang’s all here.

This is definitely a polarising trend, but don’t underestimate the cosy, homey feel a few floral throw pillows and a quirky, lived-in armchair can bring to your home. Definitely start at your local op shop. You’ll find a wealth of grand millennial decor that’s cheap as chips, making this an easy trend to trial.

Curves

It seems that 2022 is going to be all about spaces that evoke a sense of calm. And curved edges are a major part of this. We challenge you not to be soothed by a room filled with gentle curves and minimal angles! Just look at our Modern Sofa with Chaise and see how “aaah” it makes you feel.

The best way to make your home a curvy one is to invest in furniture with soft edges. Some small, easy ways to add a little calm to your room? A circular rug, round throw cushions and candles or sculptures with smooth lines in neutral hues.

Multi-functional spaces

If there’s one thing the pandemic has taught us when it comes to interior design, it’s the absolute joy of a room you can do heaps of different things in. Hands up if you tried WFH life on the couch and soon realised it was, erm, not the most productive of spots?

But dedicating a whole room to a study isn’t always in line with how we want our home to be. Functional furniture that can create multi-functional spaces for us is paramount.

We’re talking WFH desks that can be easily dismantled for weekends (like our WFH desk, one of the first in market) through to room dividers that allow for a little privacy and space, but can be packed away whenever you like. Floor cushions are a great buy for rooms like these – instantly transforming the 9-5 study into a down-time area for whoever doesn’t want to binge-watch Emily In Paris.

A cosy pillow is like a comfy companion. In fact, we spend up to a third of our lives leaning on them. And when you’ve made pals with an especially nice pillow like our best-selling Koala pillow, it can be tough to call it quits, even when the time is right.

But knowing there’s a better way to bid your pillow adieu can make all the difference. There’s no love in sending them to landfill. Instead, there’s a whole range of options you can choose to give your Koala pillow a brand new lease on life. To lend a hand, we’ve put together an ultimate guide on how you can repurpose them without losing a wink of sleep.

But first – are you a little fuzzy on when it’s time to upgrade? We tackled the ins and outs of pillow hygiene so you don’t have to.

Turn them into throw pillows

Let’s get something straight – just because a pillow can no longer support you in the way it wants to, doesn’t mean it has no place in your home. Extend its life by upcycling it into a throw cushion or floor cushion for your living room.

Create a cosy bed for your pets

We’re pretty sure that most pet owners are used to sharing their pillows anyway… So why not count your losses and keep your furry friends covered with a refurbished bed. Whether you cover it with a quilt or get creative with old T-shirts, your pets are bound to love you for it.

Use them in the garden

While the garden might not be an obvious contender, a repurposed pillow can act as a great knee pad when you’re getting friendly with the weeds. We recommend grabbing some waterproof material to protect it from the elements. It may not be the prettiest but hey, it works!

Turn them into a seating pad

With a little imagination (and a few Youtube tutorials), get a little creative with the scissors and turn your old memory foam pillow into a seating pad, padding for a footstool or even an upholstery cushion insert for that one dining room chair that everyone avoids

Use them as packing materials

Save yourself the headache during a house move by repurposing your pillow into packing material to protect your precious cargo. The memory foam can be carefully cut into smaller pieces to cushion ceramics, glassware, utensils and even mirrors and TVs.

Here at Koala, we make some pretty cool stuff and we’re damn proud of it.

So we’ve pulled together a list of five of the best things we can’t stop raving about (and we reckon you’ll love them too.) From a sweat-free pillow, layered duvets, to cable management holes in our bed base read on to find out more.

1. Heads or Tails

Forget the endless search for the short side of the sheets. Koala sheets feature labels for the head and toes on each corner, to help take the guess workout out of making the bed.

Our Koala sheets feature a handy ‘head’ and ‘toes’ tag

2. Custom comfort

Whether it’s our New Koala Mattress, our comfy Calm As Mattress or cloud-like Soul Mate Mattress, all our mattresses have a customisable comfort layer. Simply unzip and flip to choose between a firm and medium-firm feeling.

The custom comfort doesn’t end there. Our award-winning Koala Pillow has a softer and a firmer side, making it perfect for all sorts of sleepers. It also features a gel-infused memory foam that moves heat and moisture away from your noggin. Like our mattresses, it’s ventilated and allows airflow to the other side of the pillow.

3. Double the duvets

Koala duvets are not only comfy and soft, they are designed to be used together.

Our Balmy Nights Duvet is the perfect light summer quilt to keep you comfy on hot nights. While our All Seasons Duvet is the perfect medium weight quilt for all year round.

When the temperature drops and you want to feel extra toasty, simply connect the two quilts using the tabs at each corner to make one super-warm winter weight quilt.

Our two quilt covers can be connected together for even extra warmth

4. Say goodbye to bunching

There are few things worse than waking up after a restless night to find your duvet has retreated to the bottom of the cover. Now, you can say bonne nuit to bunching thanks to our Koala Duvet Covers. Specially designed to work with our Koala Duvets, our Koala Duvet Covers have ties in each corner which loop easily into the connector tabs on the duvet, so your quilt will stay exactly where it should – all night long!

5. Easy organisation

There are so many things that make our Paddington Bed Base a winner, literally, it just won a Good Design Award!

But one feature that might pass you by is the handy storage shelf just behind the headboard complete with cable management holes for you to stash your pillows and charge your devices.

Here at Koala, we know that sheets are the secret to the perfect snooze. But with so many sheet sets on the market, finding the bed linen of your dream can be a bit of a nightmare.

From cotton to bamboo, linen to tencel, it’s no wonder sheets can hinder a good night’s sleep. But fear not – our experts in resting have come to the rescue to help you decide which of our snoozy sheet sets will fit snugly into your life.

Introducing our TENCEL™ sheets

The Koala TENCEL™ Duvet Cover Set in Bluegum

What is TENCEL™ fabric?

Tencel is a highly sustainable fabric made from wood cellulite. Yes, it’s made from trees! At the start of its life cycle, our Koala TENCEL™ sheets begin as trees grown on low-grade land. Irrigated by rainwater, the trees are cut and processed into chips, which are then turned into pulp. The pulp is blended with water and solvent to create our beloved TENCEL™ sheets.

Is TENCEL™ sustainable?

The process of making tencel is more sustainable than other methods of sheet production, making it one of our favourite choices to sleep on here at Koala.

Is TENCEL™ fabric good for summer?

We love our Tencel™ sheets because they’re luxurious, smooth and skin-friendly. The fabric itself is far more absorbent than cotton, silky soft and cooler than linen. We’re also pretty chuffed about TENCEL™ as it holds the colour of our sheet sets really well, thanks to its special cellulose structure.

We use 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres for our dreamy sheet sets and duvet cover sets. A legend at moisture-wicking, our TENCEL™ sheet sets will help you maintain a neutral temperature as you sleep, no matter how hot or cool the outside world is. Designed to keep you from feeling hot and sticky on summer nights, TENCEL™ has a knack for breathability.

Is TENCEL™ better than cotton?

Boy oh boy, where do we start? While sheet preferences are personal, we’re big believers that TENCEL™ trumps cotton any day. Don’t get us wrong – cotton can certainly provide you with a comfy night’s sleep. But the main difference here is that TENCEL™ is softer, silkier and far more breathable – whereas cotton is more a cosy fabric.

As the most versatile sheet fabric on the market, cotton will keep you cool in the summer and regulate your body temperature. However, it can also be affected by moisture and mildew, making it a tricky fibre to fight in humid environments, or if you’re a naturally sweatier sleeper.

Say hello to Le Linen

The Koala Le Linen Duvet Cover Set in Natural

What is linen fabric?

Derived from the stems of the flax plant, our Le Linen Sheet Set features an all-natural and environmentally-friendly fibre.

Thanks to all of the feathers in the flax linen cap, this material is also a little pricier than other materials like cotton and Tencel. As a luxury fabric, a French linen sheet set is more than worth the splurge.

The process of making flax linen sheets is also a little more tedious and time-consuming. Cotton is in abundance, whereas the flax plant is less accessible.

Is linen good for summer?

Linen sheets are naturally hypoallergenic, meaning that people who suffer from allergies or sensitive skin can rest sweetly. Phew! It’s also a hygroscopic material. It conducts moisture well and helps you to stay sweat-free in summer and cosy in winter. Boldy breathable and durable, both our sheets and duvet cover set boasts A+ airflow that leaves the sleeper cooler and drier for longer.

Plus, they’re also super strong, meaning you won’t have to buy new bedding for a long while! Because the linen thread is often thicker and longer, your sheets are set to last a heck of a lot longer than your run-of-the-mill cotton sheets. When you invest in our Le Linen Sheet Set, you’re signing up for a long term love. Our French linen sheets are especially loved-up having been sourced straight from Normandy, France. Ooh la la!

Koala Le Linen in Sunset Sky

Does linen itch?

You may have heard whispers that sometimes linen flax sheets can feel a little stiff when you first purchase them. We combatted this by treating our sheets with a special enzyme wash, meaning these are soft to touch straight out of the box.

So what sheets are right for me?

We’ve laid it all out for you, so now the doozy of decision-making is up to you! Made with top-notch materials, you’re one click away from nicer naps. Whether staying sweet with flax linen all year round tickles your fancy, or feeling silky smooth with TENCEL™ is up your alley, our Koala bedding is quality, comfy and ticks all the boxes.

One of the most iconic animals in Australia – the koala – is one step closer to extinction.

The Australian Government has listed koalas as an endangered species in Queensland, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

Following severe population declines, made worse by the 2019-2020 bushfires, conservation and animal welfare groups including the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Humane Society International (HSI) and WWF-Australia nominated the government to “uplist” to the koala status, in a bid to increase legal protections for the national icon.

IFAW Wildlife Campaign Manager Josey Sharrad said that while koalas would gain elevated protections, the decision was a double-edged sword.

“This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect critical habitat from development and land-clearing and seriously address the impacts of climate change,” she said.

AW Wildlife Campaign Manager Josey Sharrad

Recent research by the Australian Conservation Foundation revealed more than 25,000 hectares of koala habitats have been approved for clearing since the species was listed vulnerable to extinction in 2012. That’s 12,500 times the size of the MCG!

While we hope this Endangered status will provide koalas and their forest homes with greater protection under national law, there is more that can be done.

How we’re helping protect our furry friends

Protecting koalas and their habitats has been at the forefront of our mission since the beginning. When you buy a Koala mattress, you don’t just get a cute koala toy in the box, a portion of each sale goes directly to helping our favourite sleepy mates.

“At Koala we believe in reversing environmental trends and leaving the Earth in better condition than we found it. That’s why we partner with organisations like WWF, supporting their work to build better habitats and innovating together to help protect biodiversity,” says Koala Co-Founder and CEO Mitchell Taylor.

Through our partnership with WWF-Australia we’ve donated over $2 million to help koalas, green sea turtles and the glossy black cockatoo. So where does the money go?

Koalas Forever

The funds go directly to supporting programs like Koalas Forever, WWF-Australia’s broad koala and wildlife recovery and protection program, which aims to double the number of koalas in eastern Australia by 2050.

In 2021, Koala customers helped WWF-Australia plant 46,000 koala feed trees, restore 40 hectares of koala habitat and upskill 70 wildlife vets.

Ipswich Koala Protect Society

Donations from Koala also helped the operation of wildlife care facilities, including the Ipswich Koala Protection Society (IKPS). For over 25 years, IKPS has provided a 24/7 ambulance service and dedicated Koala Rescue & Rehabilitation Clinic for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife.

IKPS rescues hand raises and rehabilitates orphaned koalas and other native wildlife for release to the wild. Each year they rescue more than 180 koalas.

With Koala’s ongoing support, funds have been provided to IKPS to:

Towards Two Billion Trees

We’re also helping to restore forests in eastern Australia. Koala was the first to partner with WWF-Australia on its long-term landscape restoration program, Towards Two Billion Trees. The program aims to grow and save two billion trees in Australia by 2030. Together, we are creating homes for koalas and helping to conserve biodiversity across Australia.

Bangalow Koalas

We’re also supporting Bangalow Koalas to create a koala wildlife corridor in the Northern Rivers of NSW. The aim is to plant 500,000 trees by the end of 2025.

If you would like to help further, you can also donate to WWF-Australia directly.
