How to care for your Koala Mattress

Sleep is the foundation of a happy, healthy life, so winding down on a superior mattress each night is something you want to get right. But this shouldn’t be a situation that’s all take, take, take; look after your Koala mattress and you’ll find yourself in a loving, long-term partnership.

The mattress is our first love at Koala. True to our vision of creating better furniture for the world and helping you sleep well, our original Koala Mattress quickly became Australia’s favourite with over 25,000 five-star reviews.

We know what goes into crafting a primo mattress, but we’ve also listened to your feedback. Years in the making, our range now includes three snazzy mattresses to suit everyone’s sleep preferences, all with the important goal of helping you fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer.

We’re proud to say Koala has the only three fully certified Good Environmental Choice Australia  (GECA) certified mattresses in Australia. This means they have been independently assessed to meet environmental, human health and social impact criteria.
The mattress foam also comes CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they are tested to ensure they are made without formaldehyde, are low-VOC and meet CertiPUR-US® standards for content, emissions, and durability.

With such special, well-designed support underneath you each night, it’s only natural to want to invest in the relationship. And while our mattresses come with a 10-year warranty, caring for your Koala mattress is non-negotiable for long-term performance.

You may be wondering what the best way to clean your koala mattress is. So here is our little Koala Mattress care guide, to help you keep a good thing going as long as possible.

I just bought a Koala Mattress, where should I start?

Welcome to the Koala family, quality sleep awaits!   Here’s a list of tips to ensure you start your mattress care off on the right foot (or paw):

  1. Once I am out in the open, simply tear open my protective packaging and unroll me.
  2. Then place me on your bed base: white side up, grey side down, and remember my famous gumleaf (I call it my birthmark) should be at the foot of your bed.
  3. After you’ve removed your mattress from the protective packaging, it’s a good idea to give it some time to breathe before dressing it up in your favourite linens.
  4. Unbox your mattress in a well-ventilated room (with a window open, and perhaps a fan if you have it) to help air out the compressed foam. This will give your mattress some time to start to fully decompress and allow the new mattress scent to dissipate.
  5. Most of the time the foam in the mattress will be recovered enough to use within the first few hours of opening although it can take a little longer for foams to fully recover to their natural state. During this period the mattress may continue to expand in all directions and will continue to become more responsive.

Should my new Koala mattress smell?

Like many new products (new car smell anyone?), mattresses that come in a box have a scent which generally dissipates quickly after unboxing and removing packaging, though it can sometimes take up to a week or more to fully disappear.

If you notice a scent, rest assured that Koala mattress foam is made without formaldehyde, are low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), and meet CertiPUR-US® standards for content, emissions, and durability, and are analysed by independent, accredited testing laboratories.

Allowing the mattress to breathe in a well-ventilated space (like open windows, ceiling fan, door open) or vacuuming the mattress on a low setting helps draw out and remove this scent. We know this isn’t always practical (especially in winter!), so if you don’t, just be prepared for the scent to seem stronger or linger for a while longer.

Your Koala mattress care guide

Regular maintenance of your mattress will help it look and perform its best for many years to come!  Set a reminder once a month for these regular to-dos:

  1. Koala mattresses are built using all new materials, and during the first few weeks of use, the support and comfort layers will adapt and conform to your unique shape and size and sleeping positions.
  2. Rotate your mattress 180 degrees each month to create an even wear pattern and help maintain its shape and integrity. You likely sleep in the same spot each night, so without rotation, your mattress will wind up with your body impression.
  3. Vacuum your mattress using low suction to keep dust, dust mites and skin cells at bay. Sprinkle a little bicarbonate of soda over the mattress and let it sit for a few hours before vacuuming, to keep it smelling fresh.
  4. For accidental spills, spot clean any accidents by simply blotting with a clean cloth, making sure to avoid rubbing or allowing spills to dry. If further cleaning is needed, use a clean cloth along with a mix of warm water and mild detergent (non-coloured is recommended). Dip the dry cloth into the solution, then apply firm pressure over the spill area in a circular motion. Follow by buffing with a clean water-dampened cloth but do not saturate as excessive moisture can impact the foams long term performance.  Dry flat and away from direct heat and sunlight.

Get yourself a mattress protector

Mattress protectors prevent a number of hiccups, so we highly recommend using one on your beloved Koala Mattress. A protector will help keep the mattress underneath clean and looking its best, especially considering it isn’t waterproof.

You’ll want a mattress protector that’s breathable and water resistant – bonus points for antimicrobial and easily washable, such as our Great Barrier Mattress Protector and Deep Fit Great Barrier Mattress Protector

If you’re someone who runs hot, one element of our mattress design you may have noted is the top-notch thermoregulation properties across both foam and fabric. But there’s no need to be concerned about the temperature of your mattress changing with a protector on top! A quality mattress protector will not compromise the airflow and cooling properties of the fabric.

If you like things toasty

Electric blankets can be a winter fixture for the cold-blooded among us, but as every electric blanket is different, we recommend checking your blanket’s consumer information along with any warnings on the device to see if it is suitable for our product.

We know you love your Koala Mattress and using these basic care tips will ensure this is a love story for the ages.
