Everything you need to know about a pocket spring mattress

Do you know your innersprings from your pocket springs? What about mattresses without springs? Finding the best mattress is never easy, which is why we’re here to help.

An innerspring mattress, the one most people picture in their minds, is made up of individual springs that are all interconnected. This mattress sits on a box spring, ensemble base or other bed base.

Sleeping with a wriggler? Well, if your partner moves around on a spring mattress, the likelihood is that every time they wriggle, you’re going to feel it.

Sounds like a recipe for a bad night’s sleep to us. But if you love your bedmate and are set on sharing the bed for many more moons to come (and who can blame you), a pocket spring mattress is probably going to be your go-to.

Pocket spring mattresses are made up of individual springs wrapped in fabric. They’re an improvement on traditional spring mattresses, but still have their drawbacks

What is a pocket spring mattress?

For this one, we asked Stephanie Roberts Baxter, Sleep Business Manager at Koala, to give us the rundown.

“The pocket spring mattress was developed to help solve the issue of transfer of movement in an innerspring mattress. So instead of an interconnected system, there are individual springs inside little fabric pockets, and those pockets are then sewn together.

“They are all completely independent of one another, so if you or your sleeping partner move, you’re less likely to disturb the other person.”

A spring mattress vs foam mattress

But there is another choice — a springless mattress. So, pocket sprung vs foam mattress? To spring or not to spring? Great questions.

“The biggest difference between sleeping on a spring mattress and a foam mattress is the sense of movement people feel from the springs — either inner or pocket,” explains Stephanie.

Foam or springless mattresses tend to create a lot less bounce. Typically made from materials such as foam, latex, gel and memory foam, springless mattresses are designed with multiple layers that can give you comfort and support. But the best part? You won’t notice your mate rolling over in the night.

Why a Koala mattress?

Imagine drifting off into a soft, peaceful sleep. And then your partner starts tossing and turning like a salad. Don’t worry — we can see your expression through the screen.

Now imagine drifting off into a peaceful sleep and then, actually staying asleep. Imagine having no idea what’s happening beside you because you can’t feel any movement. Does it sound too good to be true? Well, that’s what you’ll get with a Koala mattress.

“You might find switching from a spring mattress to a foam mattress reduces any disturbance throughout the night,” says Stephanie, shedding some light on the science.

“While the pocket spring definitely helps with the tossing and turning, a Koala’s Kloudcell mattress goes one step further and absorbs the movement, ensuring everyone gets a peaceful night’s sleep.”

A word about memory foam

Memory foam is a material you’ll often find in mattresses and pillows. It’s designed to keep you supported as you sleep and mould your body like a gentle hug. (How good are hugs?)

But while it does all these good deeds, it can also be responsible for getting you a little sweaty while you sleep, and not in a good way.

“You want to be able to move easily but still be supported while you sleep,” says Stephanie. “We don’t want people sinking into the memory foam and not being able to get that breathability and movement during the night.”

This is why at Koala, we keep our memory-foam layer away from the top of our mattresses and add ventilation for maximum airflow.

Our unique Kloudcell foam, which features in the top layer of all our mattresses, is designed to be super supportive. So you’ll never sink into our mattresses. It’s what helps keep you cool throughout the night and sets Koala mattresses apart from the competition.

We use bamboo-charcoal memory foam because it works to keep away nasty smells, to soak up any excess moisture and to keep your body at the perfect temperature.

All in all, memory foam is a key factor in getting an awesome night’s sleep, just as long as it’s used in all the right places.
