Morning Checklist: 5 Essential Things To Start Your Day

They say there’s two things in life that you can’t avoid: death and taxes. Well, we’d like to make the case for a third: waking up in the morning even if you really don’t want to. While some are lucky enough to be bona fide morning people, the rest of us have to do our best to make the most of a new day.

To help make your mornings a little bit easier here are five quick things to do that will help you approach your mornings in a more mindful way.

Make your bed

No, really. It’s the little things in life, and we promise you’ll be thanking past you for their thoughtfulness when you come home to your beautifully made up bed at the end of the day.

Making your bed after you wake up is an easy way to mentally reset, and because it’s a relatively seamless task, you probably won’t run into too many frustrating obstacles while doing it either.

Tidying your bed is the perfect way to start your morning routine as the last thing you’ll want to do after taking the time to make your bed is crumple it all back up again. In essence, making your bed is your commitment to starting the day.

We’ve all heard it thousands of times, but drinking ample amounts of water throughout the day is essential to staying healthy and, well, alive.

While it can be tempting to reach for a cup of coffee straight away (long black with an extra shot, as dark as my soul, please), try to take the time to drink a glass of water first.

There’s nothing worse than waking up and feeling fatigued down to your bones, especially if you haven’t had a good night of sleep.

Sure, sleeping on the right mattress and getting enough hours of sleep can help combat how tired you feel, but there’s nothing quite like a little bit of exercise to truly get your heart racing.

After making your bed, spend a couple of minutes (or longer) to focus on your body. Take some cues from yoga and pilates, or just wherever you’re sore, and limber up with some gentle stretches.

Eat breakfast

This one sounds obvious, but it’s important enough to reiterate. Breakfast has a major impact on how much energy you have during the beginning of your day, and how you start your day tends to dramatically affect how the rest of your day will go.

We’re not saying you have to eat a whole buffet’s worth of food, but make sure you take the time to nibble on a little something. Your body will thank you for it.

Meditation might sound awfully like something you can do while you’re stretching, if you’re an avid yogi, but it’s important to also take the time to mentally decompress outside of that.

Whether it’s a small moment of thoughtfulness during your morning commute, or a longer post-stretch session of mindfulness, take the time to clear your mind and focus on your day ahead.
