How many layers does a mattress need?

First the tired Goldilocks tried the Papa Bear’s mattress but it was too hard. Then she tried the Mama Bear’s mattress but it was too soft. Finally she lied down on the Baby Bear’s mattress and it was JUST RIGHT.

Whoever engineered that famous baby bear mattress must have managed to strike the perfect balance between comfort and support. How many layers do you think that mattress had?

Read on to find out.

The multi-level mattress deceit

In today’s world of booming high-tech sleep technology many brands will try to convince you that to get the ultimate luxurious sleep experience, you want your mattress to contain many complicated levels each for a specific purpose.

Indeed, some manufacturers will try to convince you that you need no less than 8 layers to be comfortable (and will obviously charge you for each additional layer).

But in reality, what you want from a mattress is two simple things. Only two.

Comfort and support.

You want to be able to relax enough after a long walk in the woods (or a long day at work if you’re not Goldilocks) but you also want your spine to be perfectly supported so that you don’t wake up with aches and pains the next morning (and are fit enough to jump out of the window and run should the bears awaken you from your slumber).

And to hit that perfect Goldilocks zone your mattress needs…..   Drumroll….

Two layers. Yes, two. Not fifteen. Not even 4. Just two.

How does that work?

Only two, you ask? But what about the plush layer, and the cooling layer and the foundation layer, and… ? Are two-layer mattresses even worth my money?

Let us explain.

At Koala, we firmly believe that less is more. Our mattresses consist of two layers of open cell poly foam that has the Good Environmental Choice label (GECA) which certifies that our mattress has been made without damaging the environment, is safe for humans to use, and has been ethically made. GECA is the Australian authority for assessing, testing and independently auditing products, materials and services for the Australian market.

The Koala mattress has been laboratory tested to not contain any heavy metals, formaldehyde, VOCS, or hazardous materials that are potentially allergenic, carcinogenic or disruptive to hormone systems. The full breakdown of what standards the Koala mattress is certified to abide by can be found here.

Our specially engineered signature Kloudcell foam – a comfortable, open-cell foam that is refined into the ultimate comfort layer – is the top layer of the mattress. This is the layer that hugs your body after a long day and lets you drift into restful comfortable sleep. Because of its open-cell structure which creates channels in the foam, the mattress is extremely breathable ensuring that you always sleep cool.

Underneath that is a more supportive firmer layer of high density Ecofoam that makes sure that while your body is comfortably hugged, it is also perfectly supported from head to toe, with your spine in perfect alignment.

Minimising the number of layers also allows us to reduce glue, helping wick excess heat away from the body to help you sleep cool.

By having high quality, Australian made foam that goes through extensive testing we remove the need for springs, latex, and memory foam layers which add weight, encourage the trapping of heat, and make the price astronomically high for no good reason.

The Goldilocks Zone

With only two layers, we’ve managed to strike the perfect balance between sink and bounce. How do we know that? Because we’ve tested it on our customers.

We rarely get returns. But we’ve also made it super easy for you to return your mattress if you did not fall in love with it. On the few occasions when the mattress was not the perfect match for the sleeper, the comments we got were equally divided between “it’s too soft” and “it’s too hard”. That tells us that we must have hit the right spot, the Goldilocks zone.
