Australian Moving Home Checklist

Moving into your new home, and leaving your old, can be an exciting and stressful time. On one hand, you’re moving into your dream home and starting the next chapter of your home life. On the other hand, organising the move can prove somewhat of a nightmare if you aren’t organised.

Here are some simple tips to ensure you move is all smooth sailing.

6-8 weeks before moving:

It’s important to plan your means of moving transportation well in advance, as these types of services are often high in demand (truck, car, van rentals).

Organising storage facilities, if needed, is also a good idea for some of those bigger ticketed items like sofas, tables, cabinets, etc.

It’s important to plan out the different spaces in your new home; to establish the purpose of each room. In doing so, this will make the move transition all the easier.

Pack boxes accordingly, with appropriate labelling not to get any items confused.

2-4 Weeks Before Moving:

As your move day comes closer, it’s important to finalise any organised moving transportation. Is your van booked for the whole day or just a couple of hours? 

If you like things to be organised and run smoothly, create an inventory list of items, from furniture to boxes. This will act as your ‘checklist’ for move day.  

Although you don’t want to create clutter or mess, it’s recommended to start packing non-essential items a couple of weeks out. Label boxes to coincide with your floor plan and its relevant contents (i.e bathroom, kitchen, laundry, etc.).  

Lastly, contact a cleaning service for move day. This will help things immensely and leave you one less job to do.

Moving Day:

It’s moving day! One of the most important things to do on moving day is to remain calm, level headed and treat your inventory list as your bible! Check off all your labeled boxes as they are put into your moving truck. And remember to keep all your valuables, such as passports, cash, jewellery, on you.

Ensure a last check of the old property is done to ensure nothing valuable is left behind. 

When arriving to your beautiful new home, a good clean of the kitchen and living areas comes highly recommended. Assemble your beds as soon as possible (you’ll thank us later), and when ready, begin unpacking. The kitchen and bathroom essentials should be unpacked first.
