Accidents happen: Removing urine stains from your mattress

Whether you wake up next to a nasty surprise from sleeping with your pet, or your little one had an accident overnight, cleaning pee stains and odors from your mattress can seem like an impossible task. Before you rush out to buy harsh chemicals, spend hours scrubbing (this is a big no, we’ll get into that), and buy a set of plastic bed sheets, read our step by step solution that uses household items saving you time and money.

With these items and a bit of elbow grease, you’ll be able to effectively:

  • Clean and disinfect your mattress
  • Remove old stains and discolouration
  • Remove lingering odours

What you’ll need:

  • Baking soda
  • Clean towels
  • Cold water
  • Laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Vacuum
  • Plastic wrap

Clean and disinfect your mattress

Step 1: Clean your bedding

Strip your sheets, mattress protector and removable mattress cover from your Koala Mattress and get them into the wash as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove stains and smells. If your sheets still smell after the first wash, add a cup of white vinegar to the detergent and wash them again. While your sheets are in the wash, move on to cleaning the mattress.

Step 2: Blot the area on your mattress

Blot being the keyword. Take a fresh, dry towel and blot the area you’re cleaning, soaking up as much liquid as you can.

Tip: DON’T SCRUB – this will push the liquid further into the mattress and make it harder to clean.

Step 3: Apply the cleaning solution

Take a spray bottle and combine two parts cold water, one part white vinegar, and a dash of laundry detergent. Spray the area with plenty of the solution to really soak it.

Step 4: Let it soak in

Allow it to soak in for 10-15min before blotting the area with a new clean cloth to absorb excess liquid.

Step 5: Cover with baking soda

Cover the entire area with baking soda and leave for 8-10 hours.

Step 6: Vacuum

Once the powder is completely dry, vacuum the baking soda to finish the cleaning process. If the stains or odor persists, repeat steps three through six.

Remove old stains and discolouration

It’s easiest to remove stains when the accident has only just happened, but even if you have set in stains, don’t go buying a brand new mattress just yet (although we know where you could get your hands on the best one).

Step 1: Soak the stain

Using the same vinegar solution as above, soak the stain through to the depth of the original accident.

Step 2: Cover the area in plastic wrap

Blot the area with a clean towel (again, don’t rub it in) to remove excess liquid, then cover the area with plastic wrap to avoid evaporation and allow it to soak for 24-48hrs.

Step 3: Allow the mattress to dry

Remove the plastic wrap and allow the mattress to air dry.

Step 4: Repeat as needed

If stains persist, run the same process again until they’re removed.

Step 5: Clean with water

Once you’re happy with the stain removal, clean up any dried vinegar residue with water and a towel, blotting the area to dry.

Remove lingering odor

While you can remove pee and the subsequent stains from your mattress pretty quickly, the ammonia smell leftover from urine can linger for a long time. Here’s an easy method to clear the air.

Step 1: Cover with baking soda

Baking soda has a basic pH balance, so it works to chemically neutralize and remove the acidic urine smell. Sprinkle a thin layer over the smelly area, leaving it for 5-10hrs to take effect.

Step 2: Vacuum

After you’ve let it sit, vacuum up the baking soda and with it, the urine odor. Note: this won’t remove the stains (refer to the above steps again).
